Are You Innocently Damaging Your Hormones? Understanding the Hidden Dangers of Supplements

Jun 07, 2024
In today's health-conscious world, it's easy to get caught up in the latest eating trends and supplement hypes. Many women, in their quest for better health, find themselves juggling a bag full of supplements. While the intention is good, this approach can sometimes do more harm than good, especially when it comes to hormonal health.

The Truth About Supplements

Here is the thing: nothing in nature exists in isolation—not any nutrient, nor you and I. Everything is connected. Just as we thrive on connections and relationships in our lives, nutrients also need to work together in harmony. Taking an isolated supplement can do more harm than good.

For example, one of my clients came to me with symptoms of low estrogen—vaginal dryness, low libido, and light periods. She was taking a bunch of supplements daily, not prescribed, but because she read they were good. We did a mineral test and discovered she was very low in copper, which often reflects estrogen levels. It turned out she had been taking zinc for a while (as recommended during COVID for immunity), which is known to push down copper absorption. Now, zinc is great, but no food in nature provides zinc alone. So, she unknowingly messed up her estrogen levels by supplementing with zinc. This is worrying.

I've been caught up in the supplement hype too, and some supplements are hard to let go of. But know this: you can't supplement your way out of a bad diet. Whole foods from nature are the best sources of nutrients. They provide a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals that work together synergistically to support your body's complex needs.

A Holistic Approach to Hormonal Health

Hormones are followers, not leaders. They reflect what is happening in the body and how aligned with nature you are. If your digestion is struggling, your hormones will be impacted. If your liver is congested, your hormones will show it. If you are not expressing your true self, your hormones will do it for you. Nutrition is only a piece of the puzzle—an important one, but not the only one.

So instead of relying on supplements, focus on a holistic approach to nutrition. Nourish yourself with nutrient-dense foods like stews, chicken soup, bone broth, fish eggs, cultured butter, and kefir. Hormones reflect the health of the whole of you. Beyond food, nourish yourself with activities that bring you joy, being in nature, getting natural light, and engaging in healthy relationships. Your body doesn’t need a man-made pill; it needs to return to its natural state.
